In our practice of servicing industrial facilities, we have repeatedly encountered a situation where equipment failure occurred not due to a breakdown of the machine itself or the frequency converter, but due to deformation or corrosioncabinet mounting panels: quality standardswhich were violated at the production stage. The panel is the skeleton of your electrical panel. If the skeleton is crooked or weak, no expensive components will save the system from an emergency shutdown. We have analyzed hundreds of incidents and can say: 70% of problems with overheating and vibration are associated precisely with the wrong choice of material or sheet thickness.
Many buyers in Russia and the CIS countries make the same mistake: they look only at the overall dimensions and price per kilogram of metal, ignoring hidden parameters such as the yield strength of steel or the quality of zinc coating. In this article, we will look at the real technical requirements that distinguish a professional solution from cheap scrap metal. You'll learn what tolerances are acceptable, why powder coating is sometimes worse than galvanizing, and how to vet a supplier without a lab on hand.
The choice of base material dictates the operating conditions. Two solutions dominate the market: cold-rolled steel (usually St3SP or equivalent) and aluminum alloys (5000 and 6000 series). Each of them has its own strict limits of application, the violation of which leads to catastrophic consequences.
For most indoor industrial applications, the standard is 1.5mm to 2.5mm cold rolled steel. The key parameter here is not just the thickness, but the flatness of the sheet. In our practice, there was a case when a batch of panels with a thickness of 2.0 mm arrived with a waviness of more than 3 mm per linear meter. This led to the fact that when installing heavy frequency converters, the panel bent, disrupting the geometry of the entire cabinet and creating mechanical stress on the busbars. The quality standard requires that the deviation from flatness does not exceed 1.5 mm per 1 meter of length for panels with a load of over 50 kg.
Aluminum is chosen for aggressive environments or where weight is critical, such as in shipbuilding or mobile power plants. However, there is a pitfall here: electrical conductivity and softness of the material. A 3mm thick aluminum panel can be equivalent to 2mm steel in terms of rigidity, but it requires a completely different approach to fastening. Threads in aluminum quickly break off with frequent disassembly, so quality standards require the use of press washers or special pressed-in stainless steel nuts. Ignoring this rule leads to the fact that after a year of operation, cabinet doors begin to hang loose, and grounding is lost due to oxidation of the contact.
Metal thickness is another parameter where savings are unacceptable. We've seen proposals with 1.2mm panels for outdoor cabinets. This is a gross violation. For outdoor applications, the minimum thickness should be 2.0 mm, preferably 2.5 mm, to compensate for wind loads and prevent the “windage” effect that tears out the hinges. If your supplier offers a 1.5 mm panel for the street, feel free to refuse - there is a risk of deformation during the first snowstorm.
Action:Request a metal certificate from the supplier indicating the steel grade and actual thickness (taking into account tolerances). Don’t believe the words, ask for a paper document from the metal manufacturer.
A protective coating is the first line of defense against moisture, chemicals and ultraviolet radiation. Here the market is oversaturated with myths. The most common myth: “Powder coating protects better than galvanizing.” This is a dangerous misconception under certain conditions.
Galvanizing (electrolysis) creates a layer 8–12 microns thick. This is sufficient for dry office spaces or clean workshops. However, for environments with high humidity or chemical fumes, this is not enough. The quality standard for such conditions is hot-dip galvanizing or dip galvanizing with a layer thickness of 40 to 60 microns. In one of the projects at a chemical plant, we were faced with the fact that cabinets with conventional powder paint began to rust after 6 months, although the paint visually looked intact. The corrosion began with micro-scratches and went under the paint layer, since there was no sacrificial layer of zinc.
The polyester powder coating must be applied over the phosphated layer. Adhesion (adhesion) of paint to metal is checked using the grid cut method (ISO 2409 standard). A high-quality coating should not peel off when struck with a coin. The thickness of the polymer layer should be in the range of 60–80 microns. Too thin layer (< 40 microns) will not hide metal defects and will quickly wear out in places where the installers’ hands touch. Too thick (>100 µm) becomes brittle and cracks when bending or thermal expansion.
Color also matters not only from an aesthetic point of view. Light gray (RAL 7035) is the industry standard for a reason. It reflects heat better, reducing heat inside the cabinet by 3-5°C compared to dark blue or black alternatives. In hot workshops, this difference can be decisive for the life of the capacitors.
Action:When accepting a batch, use a coating thickness gauge. If the value is below 60 microns for powder paint or below 40 microns for zinc in an aggressive environment, return the product.
A mounting plate is more than just a sheet of metal. This is a high-precision platform for installing components. An error in geometry at the panel installation stage is multiplied at each subsequent stage of panel assembly.
The perforation system (holes) must comply with international compatibility standards. The most common holes are 8.5 mm or 9 mm in diameter, spaced in increments of multiples of the modular grid (often 25 mm or 50 mm). Why is this necessary? So you can use a standard set of tools and accessories without having to drill new holes. We came across panels where the holes were offset by 2–3 mm relative to each other. This made it impossible to install DIN rails or cable glands without using force, resulting in paint chipping and seal failure.
The edges of the holes must be carefully processed. The presence of burrs (sharp metal edges) is unacceptable. Firstly, burrs injure the hands of electricians. Secondly, they damage the insulation of the cables being pulled through the panel, creating the risk of a short circuit. Thirdly, sharp edges accelerate corrosion, since the protective coating there is always thinner or absent altogether. A high-quality panel undergoes a deburring process on an automatic line.
Tolerances on overall dimensions are also strictly regulated. For a panel measuring 2000x1000 mm, the permissible deviation in length and width should not exceed ±1.0 mm. If the panel is 2-3 mm larger than the nominal value, it simply will not fit into the cabinet frame. If it is less, cracks will form that violate the IP protection level. In our practice, there was a case when a batch of 50 panels was rejected entirely due to the fact that the diagonal differed by 4 mm. This meant that the sheet was skewed (“diamond”), and it was physically impossible to assemble an even cabinet from it.
Special attention should be paid to the grounding holes. They must be clearly marked with a grounding symbol and have a bare (or specially conductive) pad to ensure reliable electrical contact with the cabinet frame. Manufacturers are often too lazy to do this, leaving the panel completely painted. This is a violation of electrical safety rules.
Action:Take a caliper and check the diameter of 5-10 random holes, and also measure the diagonals of the panel. A diagonal difference of more than 2 mm is a sign of a defect.
In the industrial sector, the word “quality” is not enough. We need documents. The Russian and EAEU markets require strict compliance with the regulatory framework. The lack of certificates is not just bureaucracy, it is a signal that the manufacturer is working in a “gray” area and is not responsible for safety.
The main document for the assessment of conformity in the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union is the Declaration or Certificate of Conformity of the CU TR (Technical Regulations of the Customs Union). For low-voltage equipment this is usually TR TS 004/2011 “On the safety of low-voltage equipment”. The mounting panel, being an integral part of the NKU (Low-Voltage Complete Device), must comply with the requirements of this regulation. The manufacturer is required to provide test reports confirming corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and electrical safety.
International standards of the IEC 61439 series (in Russia harmonized as GOST R IEC 61439) establish stringent requirements for the design of NKU. Although the panel itself is rarely certified separately as a finished product, it must be supplied with a quality certificate, which indicates the parameters necessary to calculate the final cabinet to these standards: material, thickness, type of coating, tensile strength. If the supplier cannot provide this data, you will not be able to legally certify the shield you assemble.
The ISO 9001 standard is also important. Its presence at the manufacturer indicates that quality control processes are built systematically, and not ad hoc. This reduces the risk of receiving a batch with “floating” quality, where the first 10 sheets are perfect, and the next 100 are defective.
We recommend paying attention to the labeling. Each high-quality panel must have an indelible marking (laser engraving or permanent label) indicating: batch number, production date, steel grade and manufacturer. The lack of labeling makes it difficult to trace the origin of the material in the event of a complaint.

Action:Before concluding a contract, request a copy of the current TR CU certificate and check its status in the RosAccreditation register. Make sure that the HS code of the product matches that indicated in the certificate.
Even if you buy a high-quality panel, you can ruin the result with improper handling. Analysis of complaints shows that more than 40% of damages occur not at the factory, but at the buyer’s warehouse or during installation.
Mistake #1: Storing outdoors without packaging.
Mounting panels often come in plastic wrap or with preservative lubricant. Some foremen believe that “metal won’t do anything” and stack pallets right on the street in the rain. Water flows between the sheets, creating an ideal environment for contact corrosion. After two weeks, such panels become covered with red streaks, which can no longer be removed without damaging the main coating. There is only one rule: store only in a dry place, in the original packaging until installation.
Mistake #2: Using an angle grinder to make adjustments.
A situation often arises when a panel needs to be trimmed slightly to fit a specific cabinet size. The installers take an angle grinder (grinder) and cut it “by eye”. Sparks fly to adjacent areas of the panel, burning through the paint and creating pockets of future rust. In addition, the high cutting temperature changes the structure of the metal in the cut zone, making it brittle. The correct method is to use tin snips or a laser cutter in the shop. If cutting is unavoidable on site, the cut site must be immediately cleaned and coated with a special zinc-containing primer.
Mistake #3: Ignoring support points.
When installing a heavy panel (especially one wider than 800 mm), it is often fixed only at the corners. Under its own weight and the weight of the equipment, the center of the panel sags. Standards require the use of additional fastening points or reinforcing profiles every 500–600 mm. Neglect of this rule leads to the fact that after a year the cabinet doors no longer close tightly due to the skew of the frame.
Mistake #4: Mixing metals without insulation.
Fastening an aluminum panel to a steel frame (or vice versa) directly, without insulating spacers, causes a galvanic couple. In the presence of moisture, aluminum begins to actively degrade (corrode). Always use rubber or plastic washers and bushings when joining dissimilar metals.
Action:Provide instructions to the installation team. Print out a leaflet with prohibitions on the use of open flames near painted surfaces and storage requirements.
The market is filled with offers where the price is 20–30% lower than the average. Miracles do not happen: a low price is achieved either through the use of thinner metal, or through cheap Chinese paint, which peels off after six months. How to weed out unreliable partners?
First, request samples. Not photos, but physical samples of a sheet measuring at least 200x200 mm. Run simple tests:
Secondly, find out the source of the raw materials. Large players work directly with metallurgical plants (Severstal, NLMK, Magnitogorsk plant or large Asian giants with a name). If the supplier cannot name the grade of steel and the manufacturing plant of the coil, most likely he is using melted scrap or customer-supplied raw materials of unknown quality.
Third, evaluate logistics capabilities. Mounting panels are a dimensional load. They cannot be crushed. If the supplier sends them in a box along with bricks or reinforcement “for compaction”, you will receive an accordion-shaped product. A reliable supplier uses wooden lathing and separate transport or careful packaging in pallets with protective corners.
We have worked with dozens of factories and know: an honest manufacturer will tell you about the limitations of their products. If a manager says “our equipment is ideal for any conditions from the Arctic to the desert,” run away from him. There are no universal solutions.
Action:Make a comparative table for three potential suppliers, including the following items: “Steel grade”, “Coating thickness (µm)”, “Availability of TR CU certificate”, “Packaging conditions”. Only numbers and facts.
Let's calculate the real cost of ownership. Let's say you saved 15% on the purchase of panels by choosing the option with thin zinc and cheap paint. The cabinet is installed in a workshop with moderate humidity.
After 18 months, corrosion begins. You need:
The total amount of repair costs is 3-4 times higher than the “savings” you received during the purchase. In addition, there are reputational risks. If your shield leaks rust onto the floor or fails at a critical moment, the customer will never return to you.
Investing in qualitycabinet mounting panels: quality standardswhich are strictly observed - this is insurance against future losses. A proper panel will last 15-20 years without intervention. Cheap - 3-5 years with constant problems.
In the long run, it is more profitable to buy expensively once than to remake three times cheaply. A professional approach to assembling NKU begins with the choice of the supporting structure.
