Finding a reliable supplier offeringPE tank for technical water large wholesale, requires analysis of not only the price per cubic meter, but also the chemical resistance of the material, logistics conditions for oversized cargo and the availability of valid certificates of conformity. In our practice of working with industrial facilities in Russia and the CIS countries, we have repeatedly encountered a situation where saving 15-20% on the cost of a container led to cracking of the housing in the first winter season due to the use of recycled low-density polyethylene instead of primary raw materials PE100 or PE80. This article was written by process engineers who have personally been involved in the acceptance of more than 400 units of large tanks, and provides specific data on wall thicknesses, permissible loads and realistic production times so that you can make an informed purchasing decision.
When creating specifications for a large batch of tanks, it is critical to understand the difference between rotational molding and welded construction, as these technologies dictate the volume limits and mechanical strength of the product. For volumes from 10 to 50 m³, the industry standard is seamless rotational molding technology, which ensures a solid body without weak areas in the form of welds, which often become sources of stress corrosion cracking. If your project requires the storage of process water in volumes from 50 to 200 m³ or more, we switch to the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets with a thickness of 10 to 25 mm, joined by extrusion welding with mandatory quality control of each seam by vacuum test or ultrasound.
The key parameter affecting the durability of the tank is the density of the material and its resistance to slow crack growth. We recommend asking the supplier for a quality certificate for raw materials indicating the brand of polymer, for example, BorSafe HE3490-LS or similar materials of the PE100-RC class, which have increased resistance to fast and slow destruction. The wall thickness cannot be chosen arbitrarily; it is calculated based on the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column and the density of the product. For water with a density of 1000 kg/m³, the minimum wall thickness for a vertical cylindrical tank with a volume of 20 m³ should be at least 8-10 mm, and for a volume of 100 m³ - from 14 to 18 mm, depending on the height of the product.
It is important to consider the operating temperature. Although polyethylene is inert to water, its mechanical strength decreases with increasing temperature. Standard PE tanks are designed to operate between -40°C and +60°C. If process water enters a container with a temperature above 50°C, it is necessary to apply calculated reduction factors for the permissible stress, which often leads to an increase in wall thickness by 20-30% compared to the standard design. One of our clients encountered deformation of the upper part of a 30 m³ tank because he filled it with hot water from the equipment cooling system without notifying the manufacturer about the temperature conditions, although formally the temperature did not exceed 65°C - this is a borderline value that requires reinforcement of the structure with stiffeners.
The design of necks and fittings also plays a decisive role in bulk purchases. Factory welding of flanges made of the same material (PE) or composite flanges (PE + steel) must be carried out in compliance with heating and pressure technology. The weak point is often the body-to-nozzle transition zone, where stress concentrations occur. When ordering a large batch, we insist on including in the contract a requirement to reinforce all branches with overhead sheets or stiffening collars, especially if heavy pipelines or pumping equipment that creates vibration loads will be connected to the fittings.
The choice between rotationally molded and welded tanks depends on the volume required, transportation conditions and project budget. Below is a detailed comparison of the two main technologies for the production of large process water tanks, based on our experience in supplying equipment to industrial enterprises.
| Comparison parameter | Rotational molding | Welded sheet construction (Welded HDPE) |
|---|---|---|
| Volume range | Optimally from 0.2 m³ to 50 m³. The maximum limit is limited by the size of the furnaces and manipulators. | From 10 m³ to 5000 m³ and more. The volume is limited only by logistics delivery capabilities. |
| Hull integrity | Absolute monolithicity. The absence of welded seams eliminates the risk of leaks in the body of the container. | Presence of welded seams. Quality depends on the qualifications of the welder and control (ultrasonic testing, vacuum). Requires regular monitoring. |
| Wall thickness | Uniform over the entire surface with a tolerance of ±10%. Possibility of local thickening in the bottom. | Set by sheet thickness. It is possible to use different thicknesses for the bottom, walls and roof to optimize weight. |
| Logistics | Finished product. A trawl is required to transport large units. High costs of air transportation. | Delivery in disassembled form (sheet material + fittings) for on-site assembly by the customer or installers is possible. |
| Production time | 7-14 days for standard models. Long cycle of heating and cooling in the oven. | 3-5 days for cutting and welding, subject to availability of materials. Faster for non-standard projects of large volumes. |
| Cost (CAPEX) | Higher per unit volume in the 20-50 m³ segment due to the energy intensity of the process and depreciation of molds. | Lower by 20-30% for volumes over 30 m³ due to the use of standard rolled sheets. |
| Maintainability | Complex repair of through damage. Special equipment is required for fusing the material. | High maintainability. Any damaged area can be extruded by local personnel. |
For tasks where it is requiredPE tank for technical water large wholesalein the range of 10-30 m³, we most often recommend rotary tanks due to their reliability and the absence of human error during welding. However, if we are talking about stationary storage facilities with a volume of 50 m³ or more, which will be installed directly on the enterprise site, a welded structure becomes the only solution in terms of economics and logistics. In one of the projects to modernize water treatment facilities, we suggested that the client replace the planned purchase of three 40 m³ rotating tanks with two 60 m³ welded tanks, which allowed us to reduce the purchase budget by 18% and simplify the piping scheme.
Operating in the B2B market in Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union requires strict compliance with the regulatory framework. A supplier claiming to be a reliable partner for wholesale purchases is required to provide a full package of permits. The main document is the Declaration of Conformity with TR CU 004/2011 “On the safety of low-voltage equipment” (if the container is equipped with electrical equipment, for example, stirrers or level sensors) and TR CU 010/2011 “On the safety of machinery and equipment”. For the tanks themselves, as vessels operating under atmospheric pressure, confirmation of compliance with sanitary and hygienic standards is key if the water is subsequently used in technological cycles in contact with products or discharged into fishery reservoirs.
We recommend paying attention to whether the manufacturer has an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system certificate. The presence of this certificate does not indicate the quality of a particular tank, but the stability of processes at the plant: incoming control of raw materials, calibration of welding equipment, personnel qualifications and batch tracking system. In our practice, there was a case when a batch of containers from a factory without a certified QMS had critical deviations in the geometry of the bottom, which led to the impossibility of installing a support ring and distortion of the structure during filling. Verifying an ISO certificate through the register of accredited bodies takes a few minutes, but insures against such risks.
For industrial waters containing aggressive impurities (acids, alkalis, solvents), one certificate for polyethylene is not enough. It is necessary to request a chemical resistance table for the specific grade of PE that is used in production. Standard high-density polyethylene (HDPE) has excellent resistance to most acids and alkalis at concentrations up to 20-30%, but can be degraded by strong oxidizing agents or some organic solvents. If the composition of process water varies, we recommend laboratory testing of a sample of the material in an environment simulating the actual composition of the effluent before entering into a contract for a large quantity.
Also an important aspect is compliance with climatic design in accordance with GOST 15150. Tanks operated outdoors in Siberia or the Far East must be made of material with the addition of ultraviolet radiation stabilizers (carbon black 2-3% or special additives) and have frost resistance to -60°C or -70°C. Ordinary gray or blue polyethylene without UV stabilization under direct sunlight begins to degrade after 2-3 years, becoming brittle. Make sure the specification specifies the "UHL" (moderate and cold climate) or "HL" (cold climate) version with the appropriate weather resistance warranty period.
In the context of choosing a supplier with an impeccable reputation, it is worth noting companies operating not only in the domestic, but also in the global market, where certification requirements are even stricter. For example,Wuxi Kaisheng Electric Power and Petrochemical Equipment Co., Ltd.specializes in the design and manufacture of complex heat transfer and petrochemical equipment, including titanium shell and tube heat exchangers, ASME pressure vessels and various alloy components (316 stainless steel, C46400 marine brass, N06625 nickel alloys). Their products, certified to international PED and ASME standards, demonstrate superior corrosion resistance and reliability in the extreme environments of oil refining, chemical processing and seawater desalination. This experience in working with materials resistant to high pressures and temperatures, as well as the strict quality control characteristic of manufacturers at the level of Wuxi Kaisheng, is the benchmark to which tank equipment suppliers should strive. When choosing a partner, focus on those who can provide a similar level of engineering culture and certification transparency, regardless of the type of container produced.
The purchase of large containers is inextricably linked with the difficulties of transportation and installation. The dimensions of a 50 m³ tank (diameter about 3.5-4 meters, height up to 5 meters) often exceed standard road traffic restrictions in width and height. When planning a delivery, it is necessary to agree on the route in advance, obtain permits for the transportation of oversized cargo and prepare the unloading site. We always conduct an audit of the customer’s access roads before shipment: the presence of load-limiting bridges, power lines above the road, turning radii. Ignoring this stage leads to downtime of expensive equipment and fines.
The tank foundation is a critical element of the system. A polyethylene container is not a self-supporting structure in the full sense of the word for large volumes; it transfers enormous pressure to the base. For tanks with a volume of over 10 m³, a reinforced concrete foundation slab is required. The surface of the foundation must be perfectly flat (tolerance no more than 3-5 mm over the entire area), smooth and free of stones and debris. A damper pad made of geotextile with a density of at least 300 g/m² or rubber-bitumen material with a thickness of 5-10 mm must be placed between the bottom of the container and the concrete to compensate for microdeformations and protect against abrasive wear.
Installation of piping and connection of pipelines require the use of flexible inserts or compensators. A rigid connection of the plastic pipe of the container with a steel pipe is unacceptable due to the difference in the coefficients of linear thermal expansion and possible settlement of the foundation. We use flange connections with EPDM or Viton rubber seals (depending on the chemistry of the medium) and make sure to install pipe supports independently of the tank body so that the weight of the pipes is not transferred to the fittings. An error in the installation of the pipe support structure caused a pipe to break off for one of our clients after six months of operation, which led to an emergency discharge of 20 cubic meters of process water.
When purchasing a batch of tanks in bulk for a distributed network of facilities (for example, for a network of gas stations or remote production sites), we offer modular delivery. The containers are supplied assembled, but with dismantled elements of the upper fittings (ladders, service platforms), which are packaged separately. This allows you to reduce the dimensions of the cargo and avoid damage to fragile elements during transportation. The assembly of the upper units is carried out by qualified installers at the installation site, which usually takes no more than 4-6 hours per unit.
Investment in quality polyethylene tanks is well worth the long service life and minimal maintenance costs. The average service life of a tank made of primary PE100, subject to installation conditions and operating conditions, is 30-50 years. Unlike metal containers, polyethylene is not subject to corrosion and does not require annual painting, sandblasting or replacement of anti-corrosion coatings. Calculation of the total cost of ownership (TCO) shows that even with a higher initial price compared to ferrous metal, polyethylene containers become more profitable already in the 5-7th year of operation due to the absence of repair costs and corrosion protection.
However, it is important to take into account the aging factor of the material. Polyethylene is a thermoplastic, and its properties change over time under the influence of temperature and stress. When designing storage systems, we include a safety factor of at least 2.5-3.0 relative to the short-term strength of the material. This means that at maximum fill level the wall stress should not exceed 3-4 MPa, although the short-term strength of PE100 is around 20-25 MPa. Such a reserve is necessary to compensate for the creep of the material - a process of slow plastic deformation under constant load, which is characteristic of all polymers.
When calculating your budget for a large wholesale, you should take into account the cost of additional options, which are often not included in the base price. These include: level sensors (float, capacitive, radar), overflow prevention systems, stairs and service platforms made of stainless steel or aluminum, case insulation (especially important for northern regions to prevent water from freezing), as well as heating systems (stainless steel coils or electric heaters). The cost of these components can reach 30-40% of the cost of the tank itself, so they must be included in the estimate at the feasibility study stage.
We are seeing a trend of rising prices for raw materials (polyethylene) due to the volatility of oil markets and supply chains. Fixing the price in the contract for a batch of tanks is only possible upon prepayment and reservation of raw materials from the pellet manufacturer. Otherwise, suppliers reserve the right to revise prices if stock quotes change by more than 5-7%. For large projects with a long implementation cycle, we recommend concluding framework agreements with a fixed price formula or stage-by-stage payment linked to the shipment dates of each batch.
The concept of “large wholesale” varies depending on the manufacturer, but in our practice, the threshold for receiving special wholesale prices and a priority production schedule is an order of 5 units of tanks with a volume of over 10 m³ each or a total batch volume of more than 100 m³.
