Choosing the right plastic determines 80% of the success of your advertising campaign or production task.Plastic sheets for printing: types and formatsis not just a catalog of materials, but a complex engineering system, where each parameter affects ink adhesion, image durability and the final cost of the project. In our practice, we have seen dozens of cases where saving 5% on the cost of a sheet led to the loss of the entire circulation due to cracking during postforming or fading after two months of outdoor use.
The market is oversaturated with offers, but real suppliers capable of guaranteeing batch stability from sheet to sheet can be counted on one hand. This article was written by engineers who deal with paint compatibility issues with PVC, polystyrene and composite surfaces every day. We won't use marketing clichés like "high quality." Instead, we'll break down the chemical structure of materials, critical thickness tolerances, and real-world application scenarios based on 2025-2026 data.
If you are planning to purchase equipment or materials for large format printing, understanding the differences between extruded and calendered PVC, as well as the nuances of working with PET-G, will become your main competitive advantage. Below we analyze in detail each type of material, its physical and chemical properties and specific recommendations for choosing a format for your needs.
Polyvinyl chloride remains the uncontested leader for outdoor advertising in Russia and the CIS countries due to its unique balance of price, rigidity and UV resistance. However, the term “PVC sheet” hides two fundamentally different production processes, ignoring which leads to defects.
The first thing you should ask the supplier before paying the invoice is what method the sheet was made by. Extruded PVC is produced by forcing a melt through a die. This gives the material high impact strength and excellent geometry. In our practice, extrusion has proven to be indispensable for three-dimensional letters and structures exposed to wind loads. This plastic has a fine-grained cut structure and can withstand temperature changes from -40°C to +60°C without deformation.
Calendered PVC is made by rolling through rollers. It is cheaper, but has internal tension. The main problem that printers face when working with calendered material is the “shape memory” effect. When heated during thermoforming, such a sheet tends to return to the original state of the roll, which leads to uneven thinning of the walls and the appearance of whitish stripes (stress marks) at the corners of the products.
We tested the adhesion of solvent and UV inks to both types of surfaces. Extruded sheet requires less surface preparation due to more uniform microporosity. Calendered often requires additional treatment with a primer, especially when it comes to full-color printing with a high printing density.
For outdoor use, a layer of UV protection is critical. Cheap Chinese analogues often skimp on titanium dioxide and stabilizers, which is why the white sheet turns yellow after just six months of the Moscow winter. Certified material according to GOST 15150 must remain white for at least 5 years. Check the quality certificate: the titanium dioxide content must be at least 4-5% to ensure opacity and durability.
Recommendation:For street signs and light boxes, use only foamed extruded PVC with a thickness of 3 mm or more. For interior signs, a calendered version is acceptable, but only if thermoforming of complex reliefs is not planned.
Foamed polyvinyl chloride (Foamed PVC) is radically different from its monolithic counterpart in its cellular structure. This material has become the de facto standard for interior design, exhibition stands and lightweight outdoor structures where weight plays a critical role.
The key advantage of the foam sheet is its ability to hold screws and fasteners without pre-drilling (with thicknesses from 5 mm). The honeycomb structure acts as a shock absorber, preventing cracking around the attachment point. In one of our shopping center design projects, we replaced aluminum composite panels with 10mm thick PVC foam. This reduced the load on the suspension system by 65% and saved about 120,000 rubles on metal structures alone.
However, there is a nuance that many suppliers are silent about. The density of foamed PVC varies from 0.4 to 0.7 g/cm³. Sheets with low density (0.4–0.5) are perfectly cut with a knife, but have a loose surface that can “eat up” a lot of ink during inkjet printing, reducing the brightness of the image. For high-quality photo printing, we recommend using materials with a density of at least 0.6 g/cm³. They provide a smooth, almost glossy cut surface and minimal solvent absorption.
The thickness of the sheet directly affects the rigidity of the structure. For horizontal surfaces (tables, shelves in displays), the minimum thickness should be 8–10 mm. Using a 3 mm sheet as a load-bearing shelf will lead to sagging under the weight of the catalogs after just a week of use. We have seen cases where customers ordered 3mm for floor stands, which resulted in the structure breaking the first time the customer touched it.
Processing foamed PVC requires special attention to the tool. The cutters must be sharp, with a sharpening angle intended for plastics. A blunt tool heats the material, causing the edges to melt and creating an unpleasant chlorine odor. When laser cutting, it is necessary to strictly control the power: excess energy leads to blackening of the edge and the release of toxic gases.
Action:Request a sample from the supplier for density testing. Weigh a sheet measuring 100x100 mm. If the weight is significantly lower than the calculated one for the declared thickness, you have a material with a low density, unsuitable for critical structures.
When the project budget is limited and there are no weather resistance requirements, high impact polystyrene (HIPS) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) come into play. These materials are often confused, but their properties and applications differ significantly.
HIPS is the most affordable sheet plastic for indoor advertising. Its main feature is its matte surface on one side and glossy on the other. The matte side is ideal for direct UV printing or filming, as it hides minor defects and ensures good adhesive adhesion.
However, HIPS has a serious drawback - low chemical resistance. Contact with aggressive solvents (acetone, strong solvents) can lead to surface dissolution and the appearance of stress cracks. In our practice, there was a case when a client used regular HIPS installation adhesive containing an active solvent. A day later, the entire sheet was covered with a network of microcracks, making the product unsuitable for use.
Polystyrene is brittle at low temperatures. It is strictly forbidden to use it in unheated warehouses or street structures in winter. At temperatures below -10°C it becomes as brittle as glass and breaks under a slight blow.
ABS is superior to polystyrene in mechanical strength and heat resistance. It can withstand temperatures up to +80°C for a short time, which allows it to be used near heat sources (for example, in display lighting). The surface of ABS is usually semi-matte and very pleasant to the touch, making it popular for instrument housings and premium interior components.
The main advantage of ABS is its excellent formability. It stretches better than PVC and allows you to create products with complex geometries without thinning the walls. However, ABS is hygroscopic - it absorbs moisture from the air. Before printing or painting, sheets must be dried in an oven at 70–80°C for 2–4 hours. Ignoring this step will result in bubbles and defects appearing on the finished product.
The price segment of ABS is higher than that of HIPS and PVC, so its use must be justified by technical requirements. For simple flat indoor signs, there is no point in overpaying for ABS; high-quality HIPS is sufficient.
Tip:If you are choosing between HIPS and ABS for a street sign in a closed lightbox, remember: even inside the box in summer the temperature can reach +50°C. HIPS may warp, while ABS will retain its shape.
For applications requiring transparency, high impact resistance or food contact, standard PVC is not suitable. This is where polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) and polycarbonate (PC) come into play.
PET-G combines the ease of processing of acrylic and the strength of polycarbonate. It does not yellow over time, has high chemical resistance and, importantly, is certified for contact with food. This makes it an ideal material for decorating retail areas in supermarkets, refrigerated display cases and menu boards.
Unlike acrylic, PET-G does not crack when drilled and milled close to the edge. It dampens vibrations and is shock resistant. In 2025, we saw an increase in demand for PET-G in the POS materials industry precisely because of its ability to withstand rough handling by customers.
Printing on PET-G requires caution with solvent inks. Some aggressive ink components can cause clouding of the surface or the formation of microcracks. It is recommended to carry out a preliminary test on a small sample or use special primers for PET.
If you need bulletproof protection, there is only one choice - polycarbonate. It is 250 times stronger than glass and 30 times stronger than acrylic. Anti-vandal partitions, protective screens, machine fences - these are his element.
But polycarbonate has two enemies: abrasive wear and ultraviolet. Without a special UV layer, polycarbonate becomes cloudy and deteriorates under the sun in 1–2 years. Always check for a co-extruded UV protection layer. Also, the surface of polycarbonate is easily scratched, so during installation the protective film should be removed only after all work is completed.
Thermoforming of polycarbonate requires high temperatures (180–190°C), which imposes limitations on the equipment. Conventional vacuum forming machines for PVC may not be able to handle this material.
Important:When cutting polycarbonate, use fine-tooth, low-feed saws to avoid overheating and melting of the edge. Air cooling is a must.
Understanding the logic of formats will help you optimize cutting and reduce the percentage of waste, which in some projects reaches 30%. The market dictates its standards, but the flexibility of manufacturers allows them to solve complex problems.
The most common format for PVC and PET-G is2050 × 3050 mm. This size has historically evolved to fit the dimensions of vehicles and standard cutting tables. It allows you to efficiently cut parts for most signs and stands.
For polystyrene (HIPS) and ABS, a common format is2000 × 3000 mmor1500 × 3000 mm. It is important to consider these differences when designing layouts in CAD programs. Trying to fit a 3020mm long part into a HIPS sheet will result in scrap.
Polycarbonate often comes in sheets2050 × 3050 mm, but also available in the format1250 × 2500 mmfor ease of transportation in small batches.
Standard range of thicknesses for foamed PVC: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20 mm. For monolithic PVC, the pitch may be different: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 mm.
The critical point is thickness tolerances. Cheap materials may have a variation of ±10%. This means that a “3 mm” sheet can actually be from 2.7 to 3.3 mm. For gluing multiple layers or inserting into a profile, this is a disaster. Premium brands keep the tolerance within ±3–5%. When ordering large quantities, request an exact thickness range in the specification.
We encountered a situation where the automatic gluing line stopped every 10 sheets due to the fact that the thickness of the material “floated” and the robot could not apply the glue correctly. Switching to a tight tolerance material solved the problem and increased shop productivity by 15%.
Many suppliers offer cutting to size to order. This is convenient, but it increases the delivery time by 3–5 days and the cost per square meter by 10–15%. If your project allows you to use a standard sheet with minimal cutting, it is always more profitable.
There is also a service for laminating two sheets of different thicknesses or colors. For example, black PVC 3 mm + white PVC 1 mm. This allows you to obtain double-sided material with different side properties without ordering expensive special items.
Strategy:When calculating the estimate, set a waste rate of 10% for simple rectangular parts and 20–25% for curly elements of complex shape.

Choosing the plastic is only half the battle. The other half is ensuring ink adhesion. Different types of printers (solvent, eco-solvent, UV, latex) interact differently with the surface of polymers.
Solvent ink aggressively penetrates the top layer of plastic to create mechanical adhesion. For PVC this is an ideal option. However, for PET-G and polypropylene, the solvent may be too aggressive, causing surface corrosion. In such cases, pre-treatment with corona discharge or application of a primer is necessary.
Eco-solvent ink is softer. They require a smoother surface and often do not provide as much color saturation on porous PVC foam as a classic solvent. To achieve maximum brightness on eco-printers, it is recommended to use monolithic PVC with a glossy surface.
UV ink cures instantly under the influence of a lamp and forms a “film” on the surface. Adhesion here depends on the wettability of the plastic. Smooth sheets (PET-G, monolithic PVC) often require priming. Rough surfaces (foamed PVC, HIPS) hold UV ink well due to the anchoring effect in micropores.
One problem with UV printing on plastic is residual stress. A thick layer of ink can pull on a thin sheet, causing it to become deformed (“boat”). To avoid this, when printing on sheets up to 2 mm thick, it is recommended to use a vacuum table with a full contact area or print symmetrically on both sides.
If printing is not possible or a special texture is required, self-adhesive film is used. Surface cleanliness is critical here. Any dust or grease stain will cause bubbles to form. PVC adheres well to most films. With PET-G and polypropylene it is more difficult - you need special series of films with reinforced glue.
When pasting, avoid strong tension on the film. The plastic may relax over time, and the stretched film will begin to pull away at the edges or wrinkle.
Check:Before starting production, do an adhesion test (“scotch test”). Apply a piece of film or print a fragment, let it dry for 24 hours, then quickly rip it off with tape. If ink or film remains on the material, the technology has been chosen correctly.
Even the highest quality plastic can be damaged by improper storage and transportation. Polymers are sensitive to environmental conditions, and ignorance of the rules for handling them leads to hidden defects, which manifest themselves in the client.
Foamed PVC is hygroscopic. When stored in a damp place, it absorbs moisture.
Certification also plays a role.
A striking example of this approach is the companyWuxi Kaisheng Electric Power and Petrochemical Equipment Co., Ltd..
Wuxi Kaisheng's customized solutions and global supply experience confirm that investing in proven materials and technologies always pays off in long-term, trouble-free operation.
